Heavy rains causing flooding for some local residents

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) — Tracy Straw walks near the end of her driveway, careful not to get her slippers too close to the rising water which moves like a gentle tide.

“Normally you can walk everywhere,” said Straw, who lives in the Woodlands Mobile Home Park in Lockport. “Today, it’s a rather fast moving creek and this is not good. I’m not happy.”

Straw has lived in her mobile home in the Woodlands for three years.

“I’m fortunate my house is up a little bit so it’s not as bad but it has come further up the driveway before,” said Straw. “This is ridiculous. It’s the middle of winter. It shouldn’t be like this.”

Straw says says she has been dealing with the flooding every time heavy rains come through the region and whenever she sees a forecast with rain, she has to start preparing and planning.

“This happens every year every time it rains – we get a crap load of water. It gets in the garage, in the cars; it’s a mess.”

Straw is just one of the many residents in the mobile home park who has to deal with the high waters whenever the rain falls.

“It has been a real pain in the butt,” said Straw. “Having to reroute yourself to do normal things, it’s not convenient at all.”

“This seems to be the low spot,” said Joe Nowak, a Woodlands resident who has lived in the development for six months.  “It floods most of the time in this area here.”

He says seeing this kind of flooding puts him on edge.

“I’m nervous it could find its way into my home,” said Nowak.

“I can’t do this all the time,” said Straw. “It’s not fair to me, my kids, everyone who lives here.”
